International Tagus Natural Park Natural Park, Sierra de San Mamede and Sierra de San Pedro. |
International Tagus Natural Park.
Declared a nature reserve in 2006, it covers 25,000 ha of both Spain and Portugal. The banks of the Tagus River here and its tributaries form a catchment area of approximately 48,000 hectares. The park is one of the most important places of Extremadura as far as plant life is concerned. It is a prime example of Mediterranean sub-humid forest, with species such as oak, cork oak, madrone, cornicabra or durum, and most representative is the vegetation of its banks with wild olive, Kermes, mastic, juniper, jasmine, and narcissus with special reference to the Narcissus fernandessi, Lusitanian lily (Iris lusitanica), tulip bush (Fritillaria lusitanica) and the sundew lusitanica.
Also very important is its wealth of wildlife such as the Iberian Emerald lizard (Lacerta schreiberi), the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), Cabrera´s vole (Microtus cabrerae), Mehely´s horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus mehelyi), native crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes lusitanicus) and common otter (lutra lutra). But undoubtedly the most important of the park's wildlife are the birds.
