Ornithology

Although the once plentiful wolf and Iberian lynx have all but disappeared, this is one of the best bird watching regions in Europe with at least as many species on display as the more famous Monfrague.

There are 3 ecosystems present here - the Natural Parks of the Tagus International and Sierra de San Mamede and the Special Protection Area of the Sierra de San Pedro, which helps with movement between the ecosystems and therefore expansion of numbers of each species.

For example, the Comarca del Sever has the highest density of population of the Egyptian vulture (neophron percnopterus) in Europe and the Sierra de San Pedro Special Protection Area (ZEPA) contains the highest concentration of pairs of Spanish Imperial eagles (aquila adalberti) in Extremadura.
